BackgroundThe International Treaty on Plant Genetic resources for food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) is a legally binding instrument with the objective to promote the conservation and the sustainable use of crop diversity, and to share the benefits that arise from the use of PGRFA in a fair and equitable manner, for sustainable agriculture and food security. The Treaty established a benefit sharing fund (BSF) to collect payments from users of PGRFA that have commercialized their product as well as voluntary contributions from contracting parties and other sources of funds. The treaty then launched call for proposals to be funded by the BSF, which has global impact on conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.
At the third cycle of call for proposals, the BSF has funded 22 projects world-wide. One of the projects is “Co-development and transfer of rice technologies (Project No. W3B-PR-08-lndonesia)”, a multi-country project which involves national research organization in South East Asia such IAARD-ICABIOGRAD (Indonesia), MARDI (Malaysia), NAFRI (Lao PDR) and PhilRice (the Philippines).
The ICABIOGRAD is the leading institution, and project began in 2016 and scheduled to end by 21 October 2019 This workshop marks the conclusion of the project, where the main outcomes of the project will be highlighted, and information on utilization of rice genetic resources will be shared. It will be hosted by The Indonesian Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development (ICABIOGRAD) and co-hosted by Agricultural Research Institute of Swamp Land, under the direction of The Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development, Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture. Submitted papers will be published in a proceeding by IAARD Press.
